Siesta in Glasgow (Day 63): A Day of Relaxation and Adventure
On day 63 of my NOBO thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, I embarked on a journey that began with a quick 8-mile trek from our campsite to the James River Footbridge. A fellow hiker had arranged a shuttle to town for resupply, and I eagerly joined, eager to explore the local offerings.
The James River Footbridge, a plaque reveals, is the longest footbridge on the AT, dedicated to William T. Foot, a hiker and conservationist. His dedication to trail work and the completion of the American Discovery Trail inspired me. It's fascinating to learn about the people behind these trails and their contributions.
My afternoon in Glasgow was a delightful mix of relaxation and adventure. I ran errands, grocery shopping at two stores, and indulged in gluten-free pizza at Scotto's, a surprising find in a small town. The accommodating nature of local restaurants towards dietary restrictions was a welcome surprise.
Back at the hostel, I relaxed, charging my devices and chatting with fellow hikers. We discussed books, and I received new recommendations for audiobooks to enjoy during my hike. The afternoon felt like a well-deserved break, a chance to recharge before the challenges ahead.
As the day progressed, we headed back to the trail, climbing Bluff Mountain. I was impressed by my second wind, completing the climb efficiently, even in the late afternoon. A small, hidden campsite at the summit offered a peaceful spot to set up camp, though I couldn't shake the anxiety caused by the dead trees and branches above.
Widowmakers, as they're called, are my biggest trail fears. With the help of a fellow hiker, I found a spot that seemed safe enough. As I settled in for the night, I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment, despite the lingering anxiety.

As I continue my journey, I look forward to more such experiences, each contributing to the rich tapestry of my hiking adventure.
