According to research, datacenters consume only 6% of electricity in the UK and US, yet their footprint on national grids—ranging from 5.9% in the UK to 19% in Singapore—is growing rapidly. This surge, driven by soaring investments (over $1 trillion annually) and rising AI adoption, has sparked concerns over energy scarcity and political backlash. However, experts warn that unchecked growth could lead to higher costs, resource depletion, and a renewed dependence on fossil fuels. A recent report highlights a critical imbalance: while datacentres now account for 13% of global cloud computing, they also waste nearly 3 GW of unused services. As cyber threats intensify, datacentre operators face a dilemma: do they prioritize efficiency and sustainability, or risk alienating communities and governments?
